The Soak It Up! Project

IF YOU HAVEN’T HEARD YET, THE PUBLIC HAS SPOKEN. THE GRAND PRIZE WINNER OF
THE SOAK IT UP! PROJECT AWARD IS…

Misty’s Dance Unlimited

Misty’s Dance Unlimited understands it’s going to take a little help from individual property owners to make our community more sustainable. Virtually NO runoff from this business property goes to public storm drains or directly to our waterways. All water that falls on the building’s 16,800 square foot roof flows into a simple piping system and then to one of three rain gardens. Proper grading moves rain and snowmelt from the gigantic parking lot to the same low gardens, where the runoff soaks through a special soil mixture to naturally filter  out pollutants. The gardens are also beautiful! Hundreds of native plants grow there and attract pollinators of all kinds, many of which are endangered.

Misty’s Dance Unlimited has created its own little sustainable ecosystem. Its owners are setting an amazing example not only for hundreds of children and parents who walk through their doors each week, but for our community as a whole.

Thank you, Misty’s Dance Unlimited! And thanks to out amazing project sponsors: City of OnalaskaCoulee Region EcoscapesChristen Farm Nursery, and Prairie Nursery. They’ve made it possible to award this business with native landscaping materials valued at $700!
